Environment

The Bow Valley is home to wildlife including bears, elk, cougars and wolves. They’re often drawn into our community to graze on berries and green grasses. In Canmore, we co-exist with wildlife.

Canmore has made great strides towards reducing human-wildlife conflicts.  We must all play a part.

  • Stay on the trails
  • Honour closures
  • Proper use of our bear-proof garbage, recycling and composting facilities
  • Always clean up after yourself when outdoors
  • Be prepared: carry bear spray (and know how to use it!), keep a distance from all wildlife and make noise as you travel even along the trails in town
  • Report sightings to 403.591.7755

  • WildSmart: Check their channels for regular bear reports, trail closures
Other Environmental Issues
Wildfire and Climate Change
Safety in the Backcountry
  • Avalanches are a risk. Take a course, be prepared.
  • Wildlife safety. Follow the tips above.
  • Travel in groups, report where you’re going, be prepared
  • Kananaskis Country Rescue: contact for help in an emergency and learn how to be safest in getting help

As a Canmore resident, you’re part of building a sustainable future for our community. Here are some local organizations working for a greener future. Volunteer and learn more!
